Programs and Clinics

Pro Bono Legal Representation

Private attorneys in Allegany County accept pro bono cases from our organization. Clients must meet our income eligibility guidelines and case priorities. Once an applicant is approved for services, staff seek volunteer attorneys to represent the client with their legal matter. Service priorities for placing cases are as follows: housing including foreclosure and landlord tenant issues; consumer finance; and income maintenance.

Judicare Program

This program provides free legal services to clients who otherwise would be unable to afford representation in contested family law matters. The case must be in  Allegany Count and meet case priorities.  Applicants will be asked to provide proof of income and will go through a screening process before the case is placed with an attorney. Clients normally initiate cases through the Family Law Self-Help Clinic and then seek a placement in the Judicare Program after the opposing party has been served and responds. Attorneys who participate in the Judicare program are paid a reduced fee by Allegany Law Foundation.

Family Law Self-Help Clinics
Attorneys assist with the completion of family law (domestic relations) court forms. This service is open to the public, without charge and without screening for income.

Foreclosure Prevention

Since 2008, Allegany Law has joined with other Maryland legal services programs and housing counselors to assist homeowners facing foreclosure. Volunteer attorneys meet with eligible clients to discuss options, answer questions about the foreclosure process and represent homeowners at foreclosure mediations and judicial proceedings. Individuals who have not yet defaulted on your mortgage payment, but may be at risk of defaulting, should call to apply for advice.

Eviction Prevention

Allegany Law assists tenants facing eviction from failure to pay rent, breach of lease, tenant holding over, and retaliatory evictions. Staff and attorneys provide advice, counseling, and some representation.

Services for Seniors

Allegany Law provides free services to people over the age of 60 regardless of income for legal issues pertaining to income maintenance, health care, housing, employment, landlord/tenant relations and custody/visitation. We also provide free wills, powers of attorney, advance directives, and some deed changes.

Free Wills for Veterans

Veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces living in Allegany County can have a FREE simple will prepared by a volunteer attorney.

A financial screening is required. Certain asset and income guidelines may apply.
